LM Studio Bionic
#14 Codingby LM Studio · Best local-first agent for open models
LM Studio Bionic is a desktop agent for open models that does coding and document work locally: it inspects repos with inline diffs, builds slides and spreadsheets in a sandbox, and transcribes voice offline via Voxtral. Launched 16 July 2026, the app and local inference are free; cloud inference is pay-as-you-go from $0.95 per million input tokens.
Pricing
Free (local) + pay-as-you-go cloud
Free app and unlimited local inference; optional LM Studio Secure Cloud billed per token (GLM 5.2 $1.50/M in, $4.50/M out; Kimi K3 $3.00/M in, $15.00/M out); a Bionic Pass subscription is announced but not yet priced
Free tier: Yes · Open source: No
Strengths
- + Runs entirely on your own hardware — no data leaves the device on local models
- + Covers both code projects and document, slide and spreadsheet work
- + Optional cloud fallback to frontier open models under Zero Data Retention
Limitations
- − Output quality depends on your hardware and which open model you run
- − Cloud credit terms are thin and the promised Bionic Pass is still unpriced

How LM Studio Bionic works
LM Studio spent years as the easiest way to download and chat with open models on your own machine. Bionic, released on 16 July 2026, is the company’s step beyond chat: a separate desktop app that turns those same local models into a working agent. It splits work into Code projects — inspecting a repo, searching it agentically, and proposing inline diffs — and Work projects, where it produces documents, PDFs, slide decks and spreadsheets inside a sandbox.
The distinguishing choice is where computation happens. By default everything runs locally on models you download in the app, such as GLM 5.2 or Kimi K2.7 Code, so no code or document ever leaves the machine, and voice transcription runs offline through Mistral’s Voxtral. When a task outgrows local hardware you can hand it to LM Studio Secure Cloud, which serves frontier open models from US inference under a Zero Data Retention policy.
Pricing follows the same split: the app, local inference, web search tooling and LM Link across up to five devices sit on a $0 plan, while cloud usage is pay-as-you-go per token — GLM 5.2 at $1.50 per million input and $4.50 per million output, Kimi K3 at $3.00 and $15.00. A subscription called Bionic Pass is listed as coming but has no published price, and the pay-as-you-go page is light on credit expiry and context limits, so budget-sensitive teams should read the terms before committing.
What people use LM Studio Bionic for
Private agentic coding
Point it at a repo and let it search the codebase and propose inline diffs without sending source to a third-party cloud.
Offline document production
Generate slide decks, spreadsheets and PDFs in a sandbox on your own machine, including offline voice transcription.
Burst to the cloud on demand
Keep routine work local and delegate only the heaviest tasks to frontier open models billed per token.

LM Studio Bionic FAQ
Is LM Studio Bionic free?
Yes for local use. The app, local model inference, offline voice transcription, web search tools and LM Link for up to five devices are on a $0 plan. You only pay when you delegate a task to LM Studio Secure Cloud, which is billed per token.
How much does the cloud cost?
Cloud inference is pay-as-you-go per million tokens: GLM 5.2 is $1.50 input and $4.50 output, Kimi Code K2.7 is $0.95 and $4.00, and Kimi K3 is $3.00 and $15.00. A Bionic Pass subscription is announced but not yet priced.
Is Bionic the same app as LM Studio?
No. Bionic is a separate download that can run alongside the original LM Studio app. LM Studio is for chatting with local models; Bionic adds the agentic code and document workflows on top of them.
Does my code stay private?
On local models nothing leaves your machine. If you use LM Studio Secure Cloud, requests are processed transiently in the US under a Zero Data Retention policy and are not retained after the request completes or used for training.
